Search for words by pattern

Type the letters you already know and a question mark for each empty square, for example ?A??E. Wortfinder shows you straight away every English word that fits the pattern. An asterisk stands for any number of squares: *ING finds every word ending in -ing, QU* every word starting with QU.

That helps in Scrabble when a word has to run through several letters on the board, and just as much with crosswords and other word puzzles. Enter your tiles and only words whose gaps you can fill stay. Complete lists are under Word lists, such as 5-letter words.

Frequently asked questions

How do I enter a gap?

Type a question mark for each unknown square, or tap “+ empty square”. ?A??E looks for five-letter words with A in second and E in fifth place.

How do I find words with a particular ending?

Put an asterisk in front of the ending, for example *NESS or *ING. The asterisk stands for any number of letters. Q* finds every word that starts with Q.

Can I use the pattern search for crosswords?

Yes. Set the length with question marks and type the letters you already have. The list shows every matching word in our word list. It is made for Scrabble, so a crossword answer may be missing.
